Things to Do in Naples, Italy - See Monuments
When it comes to Naples, Italy attractions, seeing monuments is a popular tourist activity.
On the corner of Piazetta Nilo you’ll find a 15th century statue that depicts the reclining figure of the Egyptian god Nile. This statue is from the alexandrine community that used to reside here. After they left, the statue was abandoned and forgotten. The statue was unburied and rediscovered during the 12th century, but missing a head. It was first used to decorate the road which it was given its name. It was eventually restored and is still called Corpo di Napoli, or the body of Naples.
Located in Naples is the oldest spire of San Gennaro. This was built as a votive offering from the people of Naples during the eruption of Vesuvius in the year 1631. Cosimo Fanzago designed the building and up until a few years ago there was a medallion which had his self portrait inserted at the base.
The spire’s construction began in 1637 and was inaugurated in 1660. It is held up by 4 volutes which support the ionic capital that rests upon the bronze statue of the Saint. This was made by Tommasso Montani.
